How Whalsay Made Began
Whalsay Made started by happy accident. Donna Polson is an avid grower of fruit and veg and had a glut of homegrown chillies that needed using up. After trying many different recipes, she perfected her own sweet chilli sauce that went down a treat with family and friends. Word of the sauce spread throughout the island of Whalsay and beyond, as Donna started selling it at local community events and fundraisers. Soon, people were contacting her to find out where they could buy it. She realised the potential was there to set up her own home business, and Whalsay Made was born.
How We Have Grown
As well as Donna’s popular sweet chilli sauce, we make chutneys, jams and marmalades, stocking them in local shops, including Island Larder and Scoop in Lerwick and Brae Garage. With our website and social media, we have also seen a surge in online orders. We have a cabin kitchen to help expand the Whalsay Made team to meet the ever-growing demand for products.
What We Are All About
Heritage, provenance and a sense of community are central to our ethos. While the company continues to grow, we are committed to creating high quality products and delivering customer satisfaction. From the beginning, the focus has been on quality rather than quantity. We take pride in the fact that every product is handmade in small batches, using as many homegrown and locally-sourced ingredients as possible. Sustainability is also important and we use glass containers and recycled packaging wherever possible.
